I’m Still Not Clear What They’re Avenging: Review of “The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron”

You know you've arrived when you even have to put the name of your movie on your poster.

You know you’ve arrived when you even have to put the name of your movie on your poster; half of a letter will do!

Rated PG-13, 141 minutes (watched 5/8/15)

There’s a moment of capital-T Truth in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Allow me to set the scene:  Two of our heroes are trapped in a crumbling church in a city that is levitating miles above the ground (yes, the entire city). A newcomer to the Avengers’ ranks is Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olson), and she is nervous. But hey, a swarm of homicidal, Pinocchio-quoting robots generally has that effect on me too. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) pauses from taking out said killer robots with Robin Hood kit, looks down at her, and grins:

‘Sup?

Rated PG, 108 minutes (watched 11/8/14)

Hooked on a Feeling: Review of “Guardians of the Galaxy”

Me thinks the poster designer has been studying Star Wars a little too closely.

SOMEBODY in the poster design department has seen Star Wars one too many times.

Rated PG-13, 121 minutes (watched 8/8/14)

Frozen is a good movie, but it’s not a great movie. What makes it an instant classic and not just another modern-era Disney movie (but with rocktrolls!) is a fantastic soundtrack chock full of earworms. Likewise, the classic musical Grease is a laughably bad movie with AARP members trying to pass as high school seniors. What turns it into a favorite is one of the best soundtracks ever. USA! USA! Review of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

captain america square

You’d think by now he’d have earned a promotion to Major.

Rated PG-13, 136 minutes (watched 5/4/14)

I haven’t seen many  adventure movies this convoluted and complex, but at least Captiat America: The Winter Soldier  has fun with itself. Continue reading
